Privacy Policy — MeshRelayPTT
Last updated: September 4, 2026 MeshRelayPTT ("the app") is a push-to-talk (PTT) communications app. It is used by individuals, teams, and organizations — including public safety and emergency services — to talk over a network in real time. The short version: the app collects no personal information for us. It has no analytics, no advertising, no tracking, and no third-party SDKs. It communicates only with the server you choose to connect to, or directly with other devices on your own local network.
1. How the app is used, and who runs the server
MeshRelayPTT works in two ways:
Local network (multicast) mode — the app talks directly to other MeshRelay
devices on the same Wi-Fi or local network. No server is involved at all, and nothing leaves your local network.
Server mode — the app connects to a MeshRelay server you enter, which relays
traffic between users.
If you use server mode, that server is operated by whoever set it up. That may be:
you, on your own hardware,
an organization you belong to (an agency, department, or team), or
R3 Systems, where an organization has asked us to host a server for them.
Whoever operates the server controls the data on it. If you connect to someone else's server, that operator — not us — is responsible for it. Where you or your organization runs the server, R3 Systems never receives your communications or account data at all. Where R3 Systems operates a server on an organization's behalf, we act as a service provider to that organization and process data only to deliver the service, as described in section 6.
2. Information the app handles
Voice audio. When you press to talk, your microphone audio is sent to the server you have configured — or, in local network mode, directly to other devices on your network — and relayed to the other people on your channel. Audio is relayed in real time. It is not recorded or stored on your device beyond a short in-memory playback history (see "Recent transmissions" below), and the app never uploads audio anywhere except the destination you have configured. Your callsign / username. Sent with your transmissions and shown to others on your channel and in the user list, so people know who is speaking. Text messages. If you send text messages, they are relayed the same way, to your channel or to a specific recipient. Location. Location sharing is off by default and opt-in. If you turn it on, your position is broadcast to other MeshRelay users **on your local network only** so your team can see you on the map. If you enable TAK integration, your position may also be sent to the TAK server you configure. The app requests location access only "while in use" and does not track your location in the background. Camera. Used solely to scan QR codes for server login and encryption key sharing. Images are processed on-device and are never stored or transmitted. Local network access. Used to discover and communicate with other MeshRelay devices on the same network.
3. What is stored on your device
Settings (server address, callsign, channel and audio preferences) are
stored in the app's local preferences.
Your server password and encryption keys are stored in the iOS Keychain,
the system's protected credential store. They are marked as accessible only after first unlock and only on this device — they are not synced to iCloud and are not restored onto a different device from a backup.
Recent transmissions. The app keeps the last few received transmissions per
channel so you can replay something you missed. This history is held **in memory only, is never written to disk, and is discarded when the app closes.**
Uninstalling the app removes this data from your device.
4. Encryption
Channels can be encrypted. When encryption is enabled, voice and text are encrypted on your device before transmission using AES-256-GCM, and decrypted only by other people who hold the channel key. Encryption keys are exchanged directly between devices using authenticated X25519 key exchange, or shared by QR code. **Where end-to-end encryption is enabled, the server relays traffic it cannot read.** Where a channel is not encrypted, the server can process the traffic it relays.
5. What we do not do
We do not use analytics, telemetry, crash reporting, or advertising SDKs.
We do not track you across apps or websites, and the app requests no
advertising identifier.
We do not sell, rent, or share your information with data brokers or
advertisers.
We do not operate any central service that collects your data. The app does
not phone home; it only contacts the server you configure.
6. Server-side data
A MeshRelay server relays live traffic between connected users. Depending on how it is configured, it may also keep:
user accounts and group membership,
a list of who is currently connected,
an operational activity log (connections, channel changes, administrative
actions) for troubleshooting and accountability.
**Retention, access, and deletion of server-side data are controlled by whoever operates that server.** If that is you, it is under your control. If it is an organization you belong to, direct questions — including requests to access or delete data — to its administrator. Where R3 Systems hosts a server on an organization's behalf, we retain such data only as long as that organization directs, and do not use it for any purpose other than operating the service.
7. Third-party services
The app connects only to servers you configure. If you enable integrations — such as a TAK server for mapping, or a Zello bridge for interoperability with Zello channels — traffic on those bridged channels is passed to those third-party systems, which have their own privacy practices. Enabling them is your choice. The app bundles the open-source Opus audio codec, which runs entirely on your device and transmits nothing on its own.
8. Children
MeshRelayPTT is a communications tool intended for professional and organizational use. It is not directed at children and is not intended for use by anyone under 13.
9. Your choices
Location sharing can be turned on or off at any time in the app, and is off
until you enable it.
Microphone, camera, and location permissions can be revoked at any time in
iOS Settings. The app will continue to function with reduced capability.
Log out to disconnect from a server; uninstall to remove all locally
stored data, including saved credentials and encryption keys.
10. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes materially, the updated version will be published with a new "Last updated" date, and where the change affects how data is handled, we will make it evident in the app.
11. Contact
Questions about this policy or the app: ryan@rrdesignsco.com If you connect to a server operated by someone else, questions about data held on that server should go to whoever operates it.
